Here's something I saw posted in another salsa forum, that I was really impressed with:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=wQmJZspFKJA

Is this in fact salsa though? It looks choreographed which I guess could be a reason to get away from using the basic step. Unless it isn't salsa and the basic step is something I'm unaware of Cool

Cool video! Salsa is a lot about improvisation but it can also be choreographed. Most performances are practiced choreographed inventions, but it is still salsa. At more advanced levels of salsa, basic steps are fancified into different movements and can be sped up and even slowed down to better compliment the music.

Many people think they know what Cuban salsa dancing is. However, most have never really seen Cuban salsa dancing. So, here are some video clips to educate.

A Chinese guy who went to Cuba to study salsa dancing in Cuba and ended up appearing on Cuban national television.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBQGoSShv54

Yanek and Diana, Winners of the 2004 Bailar Casino program. This is Casino for couples. This is 100 % Cuban dancing that is as showy and has many tricks and spins as any North American salsa dancing. Who said Cuban dancing was old and not developed? is your mouth open?

An equally good dancer, but the guy dances more relaxed (a style too). Here, he dances who 4 women at the same time. In Casino, everything can be broken down to a cross body lead although it may look different than a North America one.

Cuban styling. As the teacher says, the first basic step in salsa dancing in Cuba comes from son. As you can see, they really move around the dancefloor and really move their feet even when holding on to their partners.

Casino Ruedas. The first clip is a group, Guanabacoa, that competed in 2004 Bailar Casino TV program in Cuba. It is a clip from the documentary they are trying to make about them.

A rueda from Santiago de Cuba. The calls are older and simpler, but this is where North American ruedas come from. But you can see that dancers actually dance casino in the rueda here. They really push into their partners and do the quick-quick-slow in the guapeas. Hence, the the rueda looks more dynamic.

This is the modern day casino rueda. More complicated. But they left out the more arm breaking stuff they had before. Too bad.

Ever wanted to see how Cubans dance Mambo and Cha-Cha-Cha ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11qPpZAZyMY

One of the musicians from Elio Reve dancing. This guy is hardcore casino. Very street and does things that are not for the faint hearted.

You may not like this style of dancing. Every has their own taste. But if you have seen all of these clips, then I would be forced to admit you know what Cuban salsa dancing looks like.

This is the wrong way to dance Casino Rueda. You have to to dance Casino in Casino Rueda. When you guys step into the girl in the guapea (the rueda basic step), you still have to dance the quick-quick-slow. When you just do the quick-quick-slow in just one big ONE, it kills the momentum of the dance and you need this momentum to move to your next partner. As you can see in this Rueda, it is just stop and go.

You really have to step in and push into you partner in this reverse "mambo" step which is called guapea . It is not just touching hands. That's why, many girls feel this step is boring in Toronto. It is an amazing step when done correctly. If you don't have space, you have to make your steps smaller, but don't step to the side. The reason why you push in is because you use the momentum from the reaction of your push to move around the dance floor. In Cuban guapeas (the rueda basic step), couples often move in and out of the center of the rueda. You have to enjoy the rueda basic step and it is not just a break to synchronize more complicated moves.

I know the people in this video are just learning rueda (although they might disagree) and they may not know the complicated calls (moves) of Cuban ruedas. And individually they might be great dancers. But my criticism is based on the basic way they do the rueda.

Here is a segment from a TV program Bailar Casino from Cuba. It is a section in the show callled Aprendetelo, where they teach Cubans how to dance Casino. They are teaching very basic steps, but look at the technique, the way the feet and bodies move. You will notice the guys don't make the upside down "V" with their left arm when they push away from your partner the way they do in Toronto.

Here is Los Luceros del Son who won the 2004 Bailar Casino dance contest for ruedas. They are not impressive for salseros because they don't do a lot of complicated or showy moves. But you have to be great dancer to do these moves. I guess it is more traditional, but still great.

Here is Casino.com who won the 2005 Bailar Casino competitions for ruedas.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebGJKyPZ_Ss

The leader of the rueda is Yanek who won the Bailar Casino for couples the year before. Here is a video clip of him dancing with his partner again, because so many people asked for it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=850RmnQNC6s

Here are some very young people doing the rueda. Watch how the girls pull on the guys' arms when they do "give me one" o "dame". That is the proper way.

Stil the best quality video on youtube of Casino Rueda is still the documentary about rueda from Guanabacoa.

If you love Cuban timba (Cuban salsa), here is the trailer for a documentary about Charanga Habanera.
