It's starting to get cold outside, and the holidays are coming up... which means lots of time to stay in and watch movies! It's DVD season!

I'm always in the mood to watch a good dance movie... anyone got some good recommendations?

I havent seen Shall We Dance Japanese version, but the american one is pretty good too.
I liked Take The Lead--some pretty good dancing there.

Gonna have to vote for the original (Japanese) version of Shall We Dance as the best all time. Especially if you consider the extremely conservative nature of Japanese culture at the time it was made. The American version is not so bad at all either!

I also happen to like the dancing portions of Saturday Night Fever... sure the plot sucks badly, but some great dancing, even if it's not salsa.

Hmmm, well minus the language difference... what's the difference between the English and Japanese version of Shall We Dance? (And how do I get my paws on a DVD... Does Blockbuster carry Japanese movies?)

Well, the Japanese one (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117615/) is the "original" and the American one is the remake. It is different due to the culture differences and of course acting (thought the Japanese guy did a better job). I found the Japanese one on TV by accident on at 1230am one night and stayed up to watch it... I actually watched the Richard Gere version first.....

I suppose blockbuster should have it, call around. If not, it should be available on Amazon or something...

I've always liked Center Stage...it's about ballet, but there is actually a scene where they all go out salsa dancing!

Shall we dansu? (actual title of the movie) - Japanese version 1996: a very entertaining movie. I thorouhly enjoyed it. I haven't seen the English version but I hear it is also good.

Checking the respective web pages, Blockbuster doesn't have it but Rogers does!

I liked "Saturday Night Fever", not only for the exquisite dance scenes, but also for the story which seemed realistic, it's like a cultural X-ray of that time and place. And the Bee Gees music! Wow! Jeez! Very Happy
Another movie I liked is "Singing in the Rain", for dance and music it's a real delight. The story is some kind of a fable, quite good in that context.
From "Take the Lead" I liked the story and the idea (to motivate and inspire other people to do a good social thing - dance, in this case). The dance scenes, even though impressive, seemed a bit exaggerated to me. But overall it's a good movie.

SHall we Dance (Japanese version) is such a good movie...way better than the American one. You can find it at Blockbuster. I've seen it there. IT's a pretty popular movie.

My favourite dance movie is probably Dirty Dancing Havana Nights. I love the music and the costume in that movie....Havana in the 50s. Awesome.

Take the Lead was also a pretty good movie...more so for the dancing than for the acting/storyline.

Oh and for the 80's fab in you...Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is pretty good....and it stars Sarah Jessica Parker pre Carrie Bradshaw.

How about Dance with Me with Vanessa Williams and Chayanne (can't spell his name) - that was a really good movie and it even had a Cuban casino ruda dance scene in there. It was maybe from the mid 90s - one of my favourites!

Since we are talking about watching good dance movies and movies in general.....I have a great suggestion for anyone who is interested.....

I had the pleasure of going to the film festival in toronto a few months back and I was able to secure a few tickets to the movie " El Cantante ". starring Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez.

I was not able to go to the opening night but went on the second nite. I was a little bit upset because Miss Lopez went the day before and i missed her. I just know that I would have caught her eye...........even with that other "Marc" on her arm.....

The movie is all about the life of Hector Lavoe. A singer who was born in Puerto Rico and moved to New York at an early age. He came to New York in the late 60's and was famous from the start. Hectors' music was " Legendary status in the eyes of the salsa loving public "

The movie was very well done. I must give credit to Marc Anthony for his leading role in a movie. His acting was natural and of course Jennifer was just perfect ( in my eyes ), playing Hectors' wife in the movie.

The music is captivating and I suggest you look into Hector Lavoes' music and read about his life. Amazing story. just do a search on your computer, there is alot of sites to come across.

The movie is in not out in theatres yet........but keep an eye out for it.
