I agree! I loved the little bit of Casino that I tried for fun with Sharon, Evan and Ildi at clubs!
It was super cool, and I'd love to take a class at TDS...preferably at the Adelaide Club, but i would consider travelling for it. Wink

I would love to offer it again but it just never gets enough registrations. Admitely I have only offered it Mondays at Eastminster. Maybe next semester we could try the Adelaide Club. Can anyone who is interested let me know...

I hope you guys will teach how to dance Casino in your Casino Rueda class. Casino is a dance which can be danced alone, with a partner or a rueda. It is very different from regular North American salsa dancing.

Just look at my video clips in the youtube video section in this forum and compare it to the way most regular salsa people dance casino rueda in Toronto.

Most North American salsa teachers and students will have a hard time dancing with good Cuban salsa dancers. This is because casino is more demanding rhythmically and challenges you to learn the basic step inside out (not just the "mambo" step, big step forward and one step back).

Most people who have some athletic ability can dance North American salsa dancing. But for me, Casino is for the real dancers.

I almost died laughing when I read Billy Bryans's comments on the way people do casino ruedas in Toronto.

If you didn't know, Billy Bryans, ex-drummer of the Parachute Club, is one of the biggest promoters of Cuban music in the city.

Here is the link to this blog and his commets.

It's great that you are giving us your opinions about how to dance proper salsa and casino rueda. You must remember that this is a forum for students who are just learning - many of them from scratch - how to dance. None of us were born amazing dancers....we all go through a period of learning...and of tragic mistakes. But above all, we hopefully learn from those mistakes and become better, more educated dancers. At TDS, we try to promote a POSITIVE environment and attitude toward dancing as to not discourage beginners from advancing their interest in salsa. While we love the information you post on here to show us different aspects of salsa that we do not teach in the school, please keep this attitude in mind.

I would love to bring this program back but it wasn't popular in the past. I hope it has caught on more momentum because the most fun I have ever had dancing was doing casino with really competent casino dancers.

Keep the feedback coming...if we can get a good size group we can hold another session!

I would never make fun of beginners or even people who are learn or teach at Toronto Dance Salsa. I found the people at TDS to be very professional in the good meaning of the word.

I think what Billy and I were making fun of were a small group of people who do casino rueda in nightclubs. They are made up of a group of dancers who think they are professional or performers. They are NOT beginners and have been around for years spining, flipping and hitting people for years.

If they want to a casino rueda in a nightclub that is their right. But they make it hard for other dancers on the dancefloor because they take up so much room. They shout and scream, NOT the calls in the rueda mind you, but they just scream and stomp, because they want people to look at them. They want people to see how excited or how sexy they are. They do the rueda not to enjoy among themselves, but to make a show and so that other people willl look at them. It doesn´t matter to them that even can´t do the basic step in casino, because they are professionals and they know how to dance salsa.

I don´t think it is so bad to make fun of bunch of arrogant show offs who intrude on your enjoyment of your dancing because they scream in the middle of the song (for no apparent reason) and take up half the dancefloor with their rueda.

Hmm... don't think i've ever seen those showy psuedo casino dancers in salsa clubs, but I suppose it would be annoying for a group to agressively take up that much space in a crowded club. Especially since I've been knocked around in a club a couple times before while dancing.
From what I've tried of Casino, I liked it, and found it to be a lot of fun when the dancing dies down and there's more space to move around.

Following up on Timbero1's post about casino rueda.

"If you think you can dance the real casino or the real casino rueda, come to every Sunday at 5pm to 7pm at LURIN TAPAZ at 1032 St Clair Avenue West, Oakwood and Dufferin. It is a small Peruvian restaurant on the second floor, where Vladimir Aranda leads his regular Casino Rueda classes, the longest continous running casino classes in Toronto (the same people for over 5-6 years)

It is also a bar/nightclub with a handful of people with no cover, so you don't have to pay for the class or you can just remain anonymous in the background. Later on, they just play music and the few remaining people just dance. But if you can keep up with these people, you can call yourself as casinero as opposed to a salsero.

At Lurin Tapaz, there will be a Cuban event this Saturday and a Casino Rueda practice THIS Sunday from 5pm to 8pm for the people in Vladimir's classes (no charge). Anyone who does casino rueda in Toronto is invited. Are you up for the challenge? Just check it out and widen your salsa horizons."

A great idea would be having a Casino Rueda competition in Toronto. Performances are okay, but there is no sense of competition. I like the improvised free flowing nature of ruedas rather than rigid choreography of performances. And I prefer seeing dancing rather than costumes, listen to salsa rather than hip hop or rap at a salsa show. Each school could have their own rueda. Emphasis would be on team work and communication among the members of a rueda in a song. It could be based on the Bailar Casino show from Cuba.[/quote]

So I see Casino Rueda is being offered as a class in the Winter (08-09) semester! Wohooo! I had so much fun dancing it during the September TDS helpers training. I think I may just sign up! Very Happy
