Since we started today our first Tango lesson, I am looking for some good suggestions for Tango songs. I just did very quickly iTunes search and so far I like next 2 albums:

Tango - Alfred Hause's Tango Orchestra
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewArtist?id=82230292

Tango - Music of Passion
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=128401970&s=143455

Please let us know about some other albums or songs what you like...

A pretty new one: Veronica Verdier - Asi se baila el tango : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3xPOjgCh2Q Wink
In the last century the old songs were re-interpreted by many singers and orchestras from the Americas and Europe, so you have to search for a version that you like.
For example I like "Chitarra Romana" in Connie Francis' version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNt1Es5JMj8 but an instrumental version might seem better for dance.
Search for albums that include famous songs like "La Comparsita", "La Paloma", "El Criminal Tango", "La Jalousia" (Tango Jalousie), "Violeta".

I'm not sure what kind of music you enjoy, but there seems to be no shortage of genres that have added tango beat. Here are a few, not new but that I like and they are by GOTAN PROJECT. I think they are Argentine; hope it helps.

Well since you know a thing or two about accordion, you might like this guy's interpretation of "La Cumparsita":

...it seems that Gotan Project doesn't have a nice version of "La Cumparsita", but they have other cool (or...hot?) songs. BTW, it took me a while to figure out the meaning of Gotan. It's just the syllables of Tan-go inversed: go-Tan Idea
Tonight I saw on "So you think you can dance" that a couple danced on "Mi Confesión" of Gotan Project. You can hear the song at the last link that 4feet posted above, or this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXUIfOOHTio . Sounds very good to me, except the fast rap passage - it kind of ruins the tango rhythm, whereas the slow rap sounds ok to me in this song because it just follows the tango beat.

Another thing I found on youtube about Gotan Project: the Tango scene in the "Shall We Dance?" movie (2004) is made with their song "Santa Maria (del Buen Ayre)". You can hear the song on the the second link that 4feet posted above, or..., if you want to see again the hot scene Embarassed take a look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bibtqDxXv1o

And speaking of hot scenes, here is why I winked after the link to Veronica Verdier's song in a previous message: the song was in the tango scene from "Take the Lead": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-kgP4HoGWQ

And finally, from the same movie, a remixed "La Cumparsita" for a triangled tango: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFwl-jwpS4M

Hey Guys,
Yes, these posts were fantastic. I just wanted to say that since I have joined the group class in Argentine Tango, I have developed a different love for passion on the dance floor. It is truly a sensual and powerful dance and I believe it has improved everyone's leading and following skills. I strongly reccomend this class for those interested in taking it next semester!

Thanks to Bryant for making it fun and friendly!

H Everyone!

Just wanted to let you all know we posted another level 1 Argentine Tango for Beginners class. This will be a 4week x 2hrs per class intensive class on Tuesdays through August at Empress Walk. The idea is that this class can join the other level 1 class in September for level 2. So exciting - can't wait!

A new Tango class - WOW!
So, now when we have two Tango classes, we could already plan a practice session, I presume? Hopefully by level 2 we will not be bumping into each other that often Smile

On a separate note, every student in TDS should be reminded to register at the Discussion Board, or at least visit the DB often - it is indeed a treasure trove of valuable information!

If anyone wants to listen to some traditional Argentine tango music (similar to what Bryant plays in class) check out Juan D'Arienzo:

I also love love love Astor Piazzolla and Roberto Goyeneche. Piazzolla plays beautifully and the way Goyeneche sings is so passionate but the music is still traditional:

Also, check out this beautiful video from Assassination Tango. Not a great movie but the dancing is awesome. Pablo Veron is one of the best Argentine tango dancers in the world:

If you love traditional Argentine Tango music, check out Osvaldo Pugliese and his orchestra - when I was in Buenos Aires and searching for music his name came up over and over again amongst Tango music lovers. He's an amazing musician and has gorgeous arrangements!
