What's the deal, salsa people? Another peeve I have is when everyone tries to compare different styles, especially when one person says that one style is better than the other or the most annoying thing: That's not the real salsa! You don't have to agree with one or more styles of salsa but you should respect them. I thought going out to the clubs was about having fun. So for those who want to take this to a personal level, please don't. Leave the contests at home and just dance your butt off! Holla back at ay boy! Very Happy

We're going to have to settle this heated discussion in the Starsky & Hutch way: DANCE-OFF!

Or was it Zoolander?

It is somewhat silly to argue about it. There is really only one style of salsa dancing which is Casino/ Son or Cuban salsa. all other salsa styles are variations on the base. New York and Los angeles styles are based on the Cuban dile que no or cross body leads. Most Latin american styles take their kick step back with their inside or "'cumbia"' turns from casino. In short, most salsa dance styles have a 90 % Cuban base. You can choose whatever 10% appeals to you, but in the end you are still dancing 90% Cuban.

But it is important to learn about the music and its history. If not, we will soon turn into boring politically correct people with no opinions because we don't want to hurt anybody's feelings. The more you learn about something, you more you develop definite ideas and preferences. The people who complain about people who prefer certain dance styles are usually the ones who can't remember the names of songs or artists and listen to salsa ONLY in nightclubs or to practice routines to (in other words, they don't enjoy the music itself, but enjoy the dance and the physical and the social benefits it provides.)

It is important not to hate and respect. But I'm sorry not all countries have a strong salsa culture and the salsa Gods did not bestow every country equally. But I know somewhere someone will put nose rubbing into the dance routines and throat singing into salsa music and we will have Inuit or Greenland salsa styles. But I'm here to say Greenland style salsa dancing and music pretty much suck !!

Have fun and dance however you want. But if you take salsa seriously as an art, study and learn !

I agree it's useless to compare dance styles or even different kinds of dances just for the purpose of demonstrating that one is better than the others.
However, anyone who learns effectively a new different style or dance will notice the differences and then will instinctively make comparisons, more or less technical.

After reading this great article titled "Salsa on 1, on 2 or On Time" : http://www.tosalsa.com/goto.asp?http://www.tosalsa.com/forum/articles/article040806johnny_on1on2.html
my impression was that it takes experience and maturity to realize the difference between the good (educative) comparisons and the bad ("political") comparisons.
And I really admire the author for admitting that in his beginner days he took the useless stand of "this style is better than that style". It takes integrity to admit that, and also confidence - the confidence of an experienced dancer.

I like all your passion on the subject, but lets all save it for the dance floor.....

Frankly, I find the whole thread a little silly "Pet Peeves"? Come on... If you've been somewhere (BABS from TUESDAY-Sunday) or whatever venue, you know if you enjoy the place or not. If you don't like it, don't go back.

Comparing styles of dance? Its Dance for godsake, were not debating Middle Eastern Politics. You dance what you like, even if its the FISH DANCE, (I'II show you all one day). Its SEXY. Can anyone show me the Polka?

I once saw a guy break dance during a shine.... and MAMBO (on 2), the added LA Styles (on 1 moves) during Casino Rueda.

Just dance and stop worrying about PET PEEVES or Styles. If you like it do it, if you don't,.... don't.

KIM - When is the dance off.... I know that boxer trick.....

I think it is ridiculous to compare different styles of dancing and say which one is good or bad or real or not. Just dance away any style you like and if someone is to create their own style - kudos to them, that what is called Evolution of Dance! Very Happy

Remember, we are here to have FUN, not to fight or belittle other cultures just because they dance differently.

BOTTOM-LNE: I think this thread digressed from the topic. Folks, please remember to keep the posts relevant to the subject, make them friendly, enjoyable and informative, donít be rude and be nice to each other.

KEEP DANCING ANY STYLE!

Oddly enough, yes, if you really. My dance background started with waltzes and polkas at the age of about 4 with my family. Wink I wouldn't really say it looks sexy, though ...
