I used to shy away from shines, but I've learned to love them. I was wondering how everyone creates their own shine patterns? Do you peruse You Tube? Observe other dancers?

I get inspiration from other dance/sport forms...hip hop, gymnastics, disco...(hey, Saturday Night Fever was playing all week!) etc.
Sometimes I'll break down shines learned in class and try out different endings.

What do you do?

Funny you should mention that, because I too was intimidated by shines ...my standby is STILL the ''around the world" followed by some flairs...a few hip shimmies and a body roll and there you go....because I usually forget the choreographed shines I've seen/have learned in class when I am put on the spot.

Lately though, I've been isolating instruments in the music and moving my feet and body to that isolated rhythym - for example, I'll listen for the clave - or the horn section, etc...and dance to that, instead of only dancing to the 1 & 5.

sounds awesome linda!

I always rely on the Suzie Q (side to side or forward) and the Around the world as my default solo shines. I'll always play around with the timing of these tho.

My other favs to add in partnerwork are the hip roll, the body wave and the heel grind.

Youtube! There's a couple of good shine videos on youtube. I still have to find time to learn the patterns. ^_^

Speaking of shines, who loved the "sexy workshop day" with Sharon for level 2 and 5 this past Tuesday? I loved the body waves dimmed lights! hahah..
I'm always impressed when i see the class get the moves so quickly.

What's really good, playas and salseritas? I definitely enjoy the body waves and movement last night. I used to do something like that way back in the day. On anothe note, if anyone wants level 6, holla back at ya boy!

Love bodywaves! I am trying to add them in solo and partner work
If I get caught off guard by a partner who is leading me into T-hold--SuzieQs save my tail.
I love around-the-world--I try to add different endings to it tho.
Hill-grinds, slides, hook-turns.... I also improvise a lot whenever I can on the dance floor.

I think YouTube is great for inspiration, find some Salsa clips and see the shines/styling then try to do in on your own.

Hey girls, what do you mean “around the world”? I know it as a pattern, not as a shine…

You're right, it's a turn pattern also. But the one these girls are talking about here is a shine you will learn in L4 or L5.

Around the world is a pattern when the lady is travels around the man in front of him, but in there is also around the world shine that Sharon teaches in level 3 if I am not mistaken.

Yes, I am referring to the around the world SHINE that is taught in L4 or L5. It's not too complicated... kind of like the box step taught in jazz! with a tap on the 4-5 and a slide on the 6-7
