I am so happy to see this online discussion. I agree with all the comments made, but I'd like to point out that the merits of cardio salsa is highly dependant on who is teaching. My name is Gorete (www.gorete.com) and I teach cardio salsa but my focus for the full class is salsa (i.e. shines), salsa timing and, I also cover some basic salsa footwork used in partner work (e.g. cross body leads). My students have told me that the greatest benefits from my class have been increased confidence and improved timing of their social dancing. Because I am a salsa teacher, I also educate my student about salsa, the music and the different styles (on 1 and on 2). Ultimately, I think what you get out of the class depends on the teacher; I happen to be a salsa teacher and fitness instructor. You get a workout from cardio salsa only because there is a lot of repetition throughout the hour and that is why your timing improves and you become more confident. The class can be a great compliment to partner work.
