Tamara's story is a common one. Many Toronto Dance Salsa students sign up for dance classes to lose weight and get fit. After all, it is on most of our New Year's Resolution lists. Losing weight can be a very difficulty process, especially if you are not a fan of the gym. But the beautiful thing about dancing is that it is FUN and, when you have fun, it isn't a chore to work out. That is when the weight starts melting off and that is when you realize that having fun is rewarding your body, your spirit and your mind.

If you have ever watched the celebrities shedding the pounds on Dancing with the Stars, you may already know that dancing is an amazing way to exercise without evening knowing you are exercising!

 

Salsa Dancing

Salsa is a wonderful form of cardiovascular exercise. It has been estimated that a half hour of salsa dancing will burn as much as 200-400 calories, an equivalent amount to such exercises as cycling, swimming or power walking. Salsa will increase your heart rate, help you burn more calories, tone your muscles, and may even help you lose weight. Because of the unique movements of salsa, you will be strengthening your body and toning areas such as abs, hips, buttocks, thighs, calves, and arms. Salsa classes and social dancing will make you sweat and you will enjoy every minute of it. Salsa also promotes other healthy habits. Salsa dancers tend to drink and smoke less. Salsa dancers eat healthier food and keep their weight at a healthy level.

 

So don't underestimate the weight loss power of the partnered dances such as Salsa, Merengue, Bachata and Cha Cha. These are the sneaky dances that don't seem like a workout until you get out on the dance floor. At your first dance social or outing, you will see that your heart is racing, your body is sweating and your muscles are working. The time always races by and, before you know it, you have danced for three hours. Our students who attend classes, socials and outings regularly will always tell us about their loose clothing, fitter bodies and amazing weight loss stories. We love to hear them!
