DJ Duck's July Hits

This month’s top 10 is dedicated to two iconic salsa artists who came to Toronto to perform some of their greatest Hits. They are amongst the world’s greatest and talented salsa performers and entertainers, Tito Nieves and Jose “El Canario” Alberto.

Born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico and raised in the U.S., Nieves began his career while participating in Orquesta Cimarron, a New York-based group. In 1977, he teamed up with singer Héctor Lavoe and his Orchestra and joined The Conjunto Clasico. Later, Nieves decided to start his solo career in 1986, setting himself apart by singing Salsa in English.

José Alberto (born in December 22, 1958 in Villa Consuelo district, Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, as José Alberto Justiniano) is a Dominican salsa singer. Jose Alberto moved to Puerto Rico with his family at the age of 7, and inspired by Latin music went on to polish his singing at Las Antillas Military Academy. He relocated to New York in the early 1970s and sang with several orchestras. He received international attention as the bandleader of Typica '73 in October 1977.

This Label was The Fania All-Stars which was an illustrious and widely distinguished musical ensemble established in 1968 by composer Johnny Pacheco as a showcase for the leading musicians and singers of the record label Fania Records. The history of Fania Record is synonymous with the history of the music we now know as salsa. To talk about Fania is to talk about the birth and subsequent explosion of salsa music worldwide. What’s more, it is synonymous with the biggest names in the world of salsa and the salsa of yesterday whose musical legacy lives on through recordings now considered great classics in the genre.

Many songs we come to love are classic songs popularized around the 40's and 60's by salsa legends like Tito Puente, Tito Rodrigues, Eddie Palmieri and Ray Barretto.
