What is Hip Hop?

Hip Hop Dancing originated in the United States in the early 1970s. There are many type of street styles associated with Hip Hop Dancing including breaking, krump, house dance and pop and lock. They all share the same elements of improvisation, creativity and a style and body movement unique to this style of dancing.

The movements of Hip Hop Dancing directly correspond to the rhythm of Hip Hop music which means you will see a lot of breaking, pop and lock, freestyling with jumps, rotations and more. There can be floor work involved as well as aerial tricks. All these elements make the dance exciting, energetic and inspiring.

While certain dance styles such as jazz and ballet require significant technique training to master, Hip Hop Dancing is much less structured and can be enjoyed by anyone interested in getting familiar with the style. In Toronto, you will find people of all ages, genders, sizes and backgrounds attending Hip Hop dance classes.

Hip Hop dance classes have become a very popular past time in North America both for the entertainment factor as well as the physical health benefits of this great workout. Classes involve a high level of cardiovascular activity so prepare to sweat and get your heart rate up.
